Gehrai

Gehrai

Depth.

The same cup is not the same coffee to everyone.

01

The name

Gehrai (गहराई) is Hindi for depth: what lies beneath a surface description. A tasting note sits on the surface of a coffee, a few words written once by someone else. Gehrai is about what sits underneath, both in the cup and in the person drinking it.

02

How it came about

It began at a cupping table in India in 2022, the same table where Sacchai’s question started.

Tasting through coffees side by side, one landed. It wasn’t just good; it was unmistakably right for one palate. The discovery was personal and precise, and it raised the question that stayed: could the same be done for someone else? First for the person across the table, then for friends and family, each of whom would have chosen differently.

Finding that coffee took a cupping table and a row of cups. Most people never get that table. They choose alone, from a bag and a few words on its label.

The wider question goes back further, to a greenhouse in 2020. The Company →

Now

The current work is back at the cupping table: building, through Amrt Coffee Lab, a careful record of how coffees actually express themselves, and of how differently the same cup lands with different people.

Next

Coffee is the first beverage, not the last. Gehrai is being developed toward a platform that roasters, cafés, and retailers could build on to help each customer find what they will actually enjoy. We are open to early conversations with prospective pilot partners.
